The team behind Frome Community Fridge

From one local idea to a national movement

Frome Community Fridge opened in May 2016 as the first of its kind in the UK. It grew from an Edventure Frome start-up course, in partnership with Frome Town Council, where local people turned a bold idea into a practical community project.

Today, our manager Terri Pitts and a dedicated team of volunteers collect surplus food from local shops, supermarkets and growers. They check it, sort it and make it freely available for everyone to share.

The idea helped show what community food sharing could achieve. There are now more than 700 community fridges across the UK.

The bigger story

The Fridge is simple to use, but it sits within a much bigger story about food waste, climate action and community.

Why food waste matters

Food waste causes an estimated 8 to 10% of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. When food goes to waste, so do the land, water and energy used to grow, transport and store it.

By sharing surplus food instead, Frome Community Fridge has saved more than 2,522 tonnes of CO₂ over seven years, equivalent to 546,250 meals.

Frome’s zero-waste story

The Fridge sits alongside other community-led work in Frome, including composting, repair cafés, reuse stores and local growing projects. Together, they help keep resources in use, strengthen local links and make practical climate action part of daily life.

  • Cut carbon emissions by keeping edible food out of bins.
  • Keep resources in use by preventing waste.
  • Build community resilience by sharing useful resources locally.
  • Inspire wider change by showing what a simple local idea can achieve.
Why is the food free for everyone?

The Fridge exists first and foremost to stop good food going to waste. Opening it to everyone keeps food sharing simple, welcoming and free from stigma. You do not need a voucher or referral. Just visit during opening hours, see what’s available and take what you can use.

It also helps people discover something useful, save a little money and share good food with neighbours.

Common questions

Who is the Fridge for?

Everyone. The Fridge is open to all. By using it, you help prevent waste, support a culture of sharing and make good food available to the community.

Is it like a food bank? Do I need a voucher?

No. You do not need a referral or voucher. Anyone can visit during opening hours and take whatever is available. The Fridge tackles food waste first and foremost, though it can also help people stretch their food budgets.

How does it work?

Volunteers collect surplus food from local supermarkets, shops and businesses. We also receive fresh produce from allotments and households. The team weighs and checks the food before making it available for anyone to take free of charge.

Can I donate food from home?

Yes. We welcome suitable donations from households and allotments. Packaged food must be unopened, in good condition and within two days of its use-by date. We accept home-grown fruit and vegetables, but cannot accept eggs or raw meat.

Who runs and funds the Fridge?

Edventure Frome CIC runs the Fridge with local volunteers and community partners, led by our long-standing manager, Terri Pitts. Grants, donations and business partnerships fund collections, electricity, equipment, staff time and volunteer support.

How can I get involved?
  1. Become a Friend of the Fridge with a monthly gift.
  2. Volunteer with collections, sorting or welcoming visitors.
  3. Donate suitable surplus produce from your home, allotment or business.
  4. Tell others about the Fridge and encourage them to use it.
