Is Social Care Self Employment Right for Me?

Thinking about diving into self-employed social care? Join us for an in-person chat where we’ll explore what it means to work for yourself in this field. Whether you’re curious about the pros, the challenges, or just want honest info, this event is your chance to get real answers and meet people who’ve been there. Come along, ask questions, and see if this path fits your style!

This short introductory course rin by Vince Tillman is designed to help people explore what it really means to work as an independent social care support worker (SCSW) supporting people with needs in the community.

It offers a practical, honest overview of the role — not just the caring work itself, but everything that comes with being self-employed, including responsibilities, boundaries, flexibility, and risk. The session is designed to support informed decision-making, whether that leads you towards this pathway or helps you decide it is not the right fit.

What will the course cover?

  • What an independent SCSW role involves in practice
  • Understanding the needs of people you may support and how to assist with daily living
  • The realities of self-employment in care: income, flexibility, responsibility and accountability
  • The pros and cons of working independently
  • An overview of legal, safeguarding and professional expectations
  • Exploring whether this type of work fits your lifestyle, values and circumstances

This course is suitable for:

  • People who are curious about or open to the idea of working self-employed
  • Those looking for more flexible working hours
  • People seeking a manageable route back into work that fits around their life and needs
  • Anyone considering work in the care or support sector
  • People with a wide range of life experience, practical skills or a desire to help others

You do not need previous professional care experience to attend.

What you’ll leave with

  • A clearer understanding of what the role really involves
  • Insight into whether self-employed care work could be right for you
  • An informed go / pause / no position and suggested next steps

Deciding that this is not the right pathway for you is a valid and positive outcome of the course.
