Fromebase has been on a roll 🛠️
We can hardly believe how much Fromebase has grown over the past few months.
Fromebase began in February 2025, when seven local people came together through our Incubation Start-up Course. They explored an idea for a community DIY shop that could save useful materials from going to waste and make DIY more affordable.
The student team spoke to local people, researched the idea, created the Fromebase brand and tested a small version before committing to the real thing.
Since then, this Edventure project has grown from an idea, to a small shop, then a bigger one and recently we doubled in size!
A few months ago, Nicky joined Edventure as our Fromebase Manager. Since then, she has been the driving force behind Fromebase. On only her second day in the job, ITV arrived to film their first feature about the project. At that point, Fromebase was still in its smaller space and much of what you see today was yet to come.
Nicky has since driven forward Fromebase in so many ways: the expansion, our brilliant volunteer community, our Fromebase workshop programme and new partnerships and donations. She has helped turn Fromebase into the warm, full, busy place that people want to visit.
ITV have even returned for a second visit to see how much has changed – featuring our neighbours Share Frome, Terri our Community Fridge Frome manager, Lily from the Community repaint scheme and Nicky from Fromebase!
A bigger, busier space
We recently doubled the size of Fromebase, giving us much more room for the paint, wood, tiles, tools and other useful materials people donate.
We’ve added a new counter, tables and chairs, and we’re now serving coffee, cake and drinks too. You can stop for a chat while finding affordable materials for your next project.
We’ve also welcomed new volunteers. They help with everything from sorting screws and organising donations to serving customers and keeping the shop running – thank you.
We were delighted to receive funding for Fromebase from the Frome Community Lottery. Giant Storage has also given us free use of a 20-foot storage container for a year, helping us accept more donations without filling the shop.
Furniture company Herman Miller will regularly donate surplus, high-quality fabrics too. These partnerships help us give more useful materials a new purpose.
We are so thankful for all the support we have received so far.
Learning practical skills
Fromebase is also a place where people can learn practical skills from one another.
We’ve run workshops on using power tools, painting and decorating, tiling, and chair upholstery. These sessions give people a friendly place to have a go, ask questions and gain the confidence to tackle projects at home.
We are just getting started, there is more to come! Keep an eye on fromebase.com for new workshops
More under one roof
SHARE: Frome’s Library of Things is now based inside Fromebase; our lovely neighbours.
AND we are opening a new location of the Community Fridge, Frome, right inside Fromebase! Help us save food waste by popping along!
You can find affordable DIY materials, have tea and cake, borrow items from Share and get some free bits and bobs for dinner, all in one trip. It’s all about saving waste.
Fromebase has also joined the Community RePaint network, which supports paint reuse projects across the country.
This was the focus of ITV’s second visit. Their feature explored everything happening under one roof, from borrowing rather than buying and sharing surplus food, to reusing paint and finding affordable DIY materials.
Fromebase is becoming what we hoped it could be: a welcoming place where people can find affordable materials, learn practical skills, reduce waste and help one another.
You can find Fromebase at Edventure – The Welsh Mill, Park Hill Drive, Frome.
