A day out on the land at Vallis Veg

Yesterday we finally closed down our computers, put away the post-its and headed on down to Vallis Veg to get our hands dirty. With so much time spent staring at white boards and re-writing proposal forms everyone was very cheerful to feel the sun and the rain and get some fresh air flowing through our bones. For the last couple of weeks we have been planning the menu for Independence day which is one of our first big assignments. We are catering for up to two hundred people on the 17th November serving delicious soups, breads and cakes (Frome Independence day website here). As it is Independence Day we have been looking to support local growers and businesses in and around Frome and Vallis Veg is one of those local growers. Chris and Cordelia kindly offered us armfuls of squash, chard and potatoes in return for some help around their eighteen acre site in Vallis Vale (website here).

Sun shining and feeling full after our weekly Friday egg breakfast we zoomed down the hill and Chris put us to work, digging out the drainage, clearing the poly-tunnels and putting the beds to rest for winter. Singing songs and with Alexandra (Chris’s daughter) keeping us entertained the work was soon done, just in time before the skies opened. It was a fantastic day and the whole group appreciated spending time together doing some physical work and being on the beautiful site of Vallis Veg. It was great to make a friendship with Chris and we are really excited about the prospects of working there again soon and the potential for an assignment there in the new year.
