Frome young people to “Kickstart” their careers & help make a difference
Green/Community Businesses Get Full Grants. Young People Get Paid Employment. Our Local Economy Gets More Resilient.
The government has announced the new Kickstart scheme where UK businesses can receive 100% funding for employing young people for 6 months. But it’s only open to applicants who can provide a minimum of 30 work placements.
So, Edventure Frome will support a group of employers working in the green/sustainable business sector and the community sector, across food production, retail, manufacturing, services, green building and sharing/repairing companies, to create 30 placements and training for young people from Frome and surrounding areas.
Young people will get a job for 6 months and training to help get a foot in the door, to increase their chances of long-term employment and building a livelihood that matters to them. They also get the opportunity to work in green businesses or community sector organisations that make a real difference in the local area, to be a part of building a greener, fairer and more sustainable world.
A young person aged 16-24 years working in your company fully-funded for 6 months paid at the National Living Wage (top-up to Living Wage is recommended) for 25 hours a week. (You can also increase hours and wages).
You can fill the placement with a new candidate once the first young person finishes.
Training for the employee provided by Edventure: Frome, including weekly training/support sessions focused on transferable work skills and on helping to resolve any issues the young person may have at their workplace
A budget for inhouse training and support
Induction training for the employer, including advice on how to recruit, induct and support young people to reach their full potential in the placement.
Employment support helpline to address any issues they may have with employing a young person in their business.
Applications need to be received by 23 October 2020
We are Edventure: Frome CIC, a not-for-profit community organisation working with young people and the wider community in Frome. Our mission is to help people step towards a livelihood that matters to them. We care about contributing to a strong community, growing meaningful livelihoods and building ventures as part of a sustainable, zero carbon economy that works for all.
Only larger employers can apply directly to the Government’s Kickstart Scheme because applicants are required to provide placements for a minimum of 30 young people. So we are co-ordinating a Frome-wide application so that:
The Kickstart scheme becomes accessible for micro-businesses and SMEs in our area.
We can support green & sustainable businesses & the community sector, and help create a more resilient local economy.
We can contribute to the creation of meaningful jobs in our town.
We can support the young people who we have close relationships with (and those we are yet to meet) who have been disproportionately affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
We are contributing to a green & fair recovery from Covid-19.

What kinds of Jobs are eligible?
The job placements created with Kickstart funding must be new jobs. They must not:
Replace existing or planned vacancies
Cause existing employees or contractors to lose or reduce their employment
The roles offered must be:
A minimum of 25 hours per week, for 6 months. Employers are encouraged to pay for additional hours if possible.
Paid at least the National Minimum Wage for their age group (£8.20 ph for 21 to 24 year olds; £6.45 ph for 18-20 year olds, and £4.55 ph for under 18 year olds.
Should not require people to undertake extensive training before they begin the job placement.
How much will companies be paid?
Companies will receive two types of payments:
Companies will receive a grant of £1500 for training and support per placement. Of this, employers will receive £920 for in-house training and induction costs, and Edventure will charge £580 to provide the training for the young person on the placement, and the support programme for employers. The payment will come through shortly after the young person received their first PAYE payment.
Companies will be paid all salary costs in arrears in the form of a grant. The grants will be paid out after month 2, 4 and 6 of the placements, and sufficient cash flow needs to be assured in order to pay wages in advance. The grant is for 25 hours per week only, paid at least the National Minimum Wage for their age group (£8.20 ph for 21 to 24 year olds; £6.45 ph for 18-20 year olds, and £4.55 ph for under 18 year olds. Who can apply to join this partnership?
Registered companies or charities in the UK.
Frome and Mendip based companies working in the green/community sector (i.e., local food production, green building, retail, and the sharing/repairing economy, charities, social enterprises, community organisations)
Paying the young people through PAYE is a requirement.
Which young people can apply?
The Job Centre Plus will suggest your placement(s) to candidates on Universal Credit, who will then apply to you. You can select candidates as you normally would in your business, based on the job and person specification you have provided.
If you have an unemployed young person (16-24 years old) in mind to take your position, they must first sign up to Universal Credit before being able to apply.
Young people need to be able to travel to your location and can receive help from the JobCentre to enable them to travel to work.
Young people on Universal Credit are not required to apply to you and won’t face any sanctions, which means that candidates will genuinely be interested to work with the employer.
What will be included in the training programme for young people?
We recognise that it can be quite challenging for small employers to coordinate a training and support programme for young people themselves. That is why Edventure is providing a training and support programme specifically designed to meet the requirements of the Kickstart Scheme In addition, the programme focuses on building skills relevant to the green business & community sector and providing an environment for action learning and reflection. Edventure will run weekly sessions which will include:
support to look for long-term work, including career advice and setting goals
support with CV and interview preparations
supporting the participant with basic skills, such as attendance, timekeeping and teamwork.
Green business and community sector knowledge
Personal skills, including communication, conflict resolution and reflective learning.
